About Macheo Payne
Dr. Macheo K. Payne is currently serving as a professor in the Social Work department at Cal State University East Bay. Dr. Payne is also Director of Youth Justice Initiatives at the Public Works Alliance. With a profound commitment to social justice, he’s committed to eliminating racial disparities in education, health and juvenile justice.
With a doctorate in educational leadership and a master's degree in social work, Dr. Payne blends academic inquiry with practical expertise. Over the years, his community-based and youth-driven approach, puts the empowerment of small, community-based organizations at the forefront. Driven by a genuine passion for uplifting vulnerable families, he brings a wealth of experience in policy & practice.
Previously, Dr. Payne served as the Executive Director of the Oakland Freedom Schools, including the Sweeney Freedom Schools, for nine years, demonstrating a commitment to educational initiatives. He also served as a Senior Director at Lincoln Families for a decade.
Passionate about designing systems change that supports the culture and identity of families, Dr. Payne focuses on addressing the environment, context, and social determinants impacting health, wealth, and opportunity. With a commitment to dismantling systemic inequity, he examines and redesigns school climate and discipline to address racial disparities and achievement gaps.
Known for his effective communication as a speaker and trainer, Dr. Payne has delivered presentations locally and nationally on topics such as education, family engagement, trauma, and racial bias.
As a consultant and thought partner, Dr. Payne draws from practical experience to design initiatives and programs that navigate challenges and promote sustainable change. His ability to connect with various stakeholders, including educational leaders, teachers, clinicians/counselors, and researchers, stems from his background in these roles.
